We cannot seem to shake this cold weather. Every time we think it is about to be a sunny day, those grey clouds come right back around. The weather not only comes with sicknesses such as the common cold or the flu, it also comes with a feeling of stalemate which makes us crave a little mood booster. Therefore, while stacking up on vitamins, here are some comfort foods meant to elevate your mood.

Porridge

Porridge is traditionally thought to be one of the best warmers when its cold. That may explain why our grandparents and parents are so fond of the meal. Whenever I hear porridge, my mind immediately goes to the childhood story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears. If you are familiar with the story, you will know that the bears were making porridge because it was cold outside and that was what attracted Goldilocks to the house.

Oatmeal

Besides boosting the brain’s performance, oats are said to be good for the cold weather as it reduces the dampness of the body. Oats have been shown in scientific studies to favourably alter metabolism and enhance performance. This is important since the body needs extra energy not only to keep you warm but to function as usual.

Tomato/chicken soup

Soups are a great immunity booster and the perfect comfort food for the busy working class. It is easy to make after a long day at work or on a relaxed Saturday. It has a pleasant taste whether you prefer it mild or chilli.

This delightful pasta dish originates from Italy which is famous for its comfort foods such as pizza and lasagna. The recipe includes pasta, tomatoes and broccoli for the necessary vitamins intake while the sausage and minced meat pair ignite the taste buds to give us a feel-good food moment. For the dessert lovers, nothing says comfort like a good old chocolate. It comes in form of chocolate bars of powder. For this recipe, you will need chocolate powder. Don’t let the word “bake” intimidate you because it is actually easier than it sounds and perfect for a large group if you are a social butterfly all year round. It may need a bit of an effort and time but the reward is sweet. Literally.
