First days are usually nerve-racking; the first day at work, the first day of the week and the first day at the gym. Most people find themselves questioning a lot on the first day hence feeling confused. For first-time exercisers, the gym can be an intimidating place. It’s necessary to be well-prepared so as to avoid embarrassing situations or unnecessary accidents. Here are some dos and don’ts on your first day at the gym.
Dos
- Know Gym Etiquette
Learn how to do things at the gym to avoid offending people on your first day. For instance, it’s good manners to wipe the equipment once you’re done with it. Additionally, you shouldn’t stay too long on one piece of equipment especially if you notice other people want to use it.
- Share Your Goals
Most likely, your gym will have a trainer. Let them know what you want to achieve through your workout. This will give the trainer a rough idea of the kinds of exercises to start with as well as recommend an appropriate diet plan. Fitness: Things To Consider Before Hiring A Personal Trainer
- Try Everything Out
Don’t be afraid to walk around the gym and try out every piece of equipment. Put your body to the test to see which exercises are right for you. It’s also a good way to get to know more about the place and meet fellow exercisers.
- Get A Protein Shake
Protein shakes are a gym goer’s holy grail. After an intense workout, you should replenish your muscles with proper nutrients. A protein shake or a high-protein meal will help heal your muscles thus preventing extreme fatigue and soreness.
Don’ts
- Be A Copycat
Whatever works for one person might not necessarily work for you. Also, our bodies are different and workouts aren’t a one-fits-all thing. Therefore, you should base your workouts on your body type and the realities of your genetics to get the most out of them.
- Overdo The Cardio
Many workout newbies go straight for the treadmill as they assume this is the best way to get in shape. Though cardio is a good warm-up workout, too much of it can damage your metabolism by burning your muscle and fat. Instead, do a few minutes of cardio then proceed to weight lifting.
- Wear Scented Lotions And Perfumes
The gym is the last place you need to be wearing perfume. Let your natural self and others around you breathe. If you’re worried about smelling sweaty, don’t. Everyone else is just sweaty as you are (if not worse). Plus, many gyms are well-ventilated.
- Max Out
One of the reasons many people don’t go back to the gym after the first day is because they pushed themselves too far. Your body goals won’t happen overnight. Lay a foundation then build up. This will reap better results than overworking your body.
Remember that consistency is key in getting your body goals. Do your research and take note of what the trainers say. You’ll be a gym body in no time
