I once heard a story of an experiment that was done to prove that healing is partly psychological. There was a group of people who were suffering from an illness. The patients were all sedated. Half of them were treated and the other half were lied to that they had been treated. Two weeks later when they assessed all the patients, a large number of those who had not been treated had also healed.
A few weeks back I was a little under the weather and so I went to the hospital. When talking to the doctor I asked him why he didn’t prescribe antibiotics, and he said he didn’t see the need to. He went ahead to say jokingly that if he prescribed them it would only be for psychological purposes. When I probed him further he explained that healing has a lot to do with what is in your mind. If I went home with those antibiotics I would automatically think that I would be fine after about a day or so. However, in his opinion, the other medication he had given me would work just as well.
What does this tell you? The mind is very powerful, mentally, psychologically and physically. If you think about it, the body can heal itself. Cells regenerate and antibodies work together for your health and well-being. Isn’t it beautiful? If this is the case, it means that in some cases we can fully heal ourselves and restore our bodies to normalcy.
Here are a few things to keep in mind for self-healing.
- Do a grounding meditation

Meditation is effective in achieving so many things, and self-healing is one of them. It’s a process that helps one to focus on the moment and practice mindfulness. But it goes deeper than that. Meditation can be used to channel negative energy outwards and receive positive energy from the universe. To do a grounding meditation, you first place your feet comfortably on the ground or the floor. Take three deep breaths, and with each exhalation you release any negative energy. That includes the pain and irritation that you are feeling. Direct your attention to your feet. With each inhalation, imagine that you are taking in positive universal energy. With each exhalation you are releasing negative energy. Move your awareness to your spine and repeat the same. Repeat this pattern three times. When you’re ready, open your eyes.
- Keep your mind preoccupied
Whenever I’ve been sick, I have observed that staying in bed makes things worse. Because then you are channeling all your energy towards the illness and even giving it power over you. I know that this doesn’t work for all illnesses, but if possible, get up, take a walk. Do something to preoccupy your mind from what you are feeling. It could be watching a movie or even reading a book. Doing this can almost make you forget that you are unwell. This is not to say that you shouldn’t rest. The activity should be less physical and more mental. Because rest is essential in healing, and this is what you are after in the long run.
- Practice inner visualization

There have been several theories on the effectiveness of visualization. It can help you to reframe your perspective towards things and in the long run lead to self-healing. How is this done? According to Psychology Today, you focus on the troubled area, and then imagine radiating energy outward from that place and then pulling in the universe’s energy to that area. In other words, imagine that you are no longer in pain, or no longer feeling uncomfortable. Imagine the troubled part feeling better and healed. Bathe in that sensation.
Another way to do this is to visualize a colour such as emerald green entering through your crown chakra, travel down through your spine and into your feet. Chakra anatomy relates the colour green to the heart, lungs, chest, shoulders, arms, breasts, thymus gland, and cardiac nerve plexus.
- Affirm yourself
The law of attraction states that you attract what you feel. So if you are fearful then you will attract what you fear. On the other hand, if you want to heal, ensure that that is what your body, mind and soul are in tune with this feeling. How do you do this? By affirming yourself. Constantly, loudly and clearly. You have to say it as if you believe it.
Here are some health affirmations that I found recently:
I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious and happy.
I am well.
I am healthy.
I am happy.
There is a never-ending supply of pure positive energy that is saturating my body and mind now.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for my perfect health and wellbeing.
